Unalaska, Alaska Part I

We arrived in the summer of
1953 and
found a house to rent and set about trying to make a permanent position for ourselves in the Aleutians. However, winter approached
and we had no work or prospects of any kind, no income, the mayor was our only friend, and
we lived in a house that was well ventilated through which the wind blew constantly.
I spent my days fishing and Elaine cared for the children, chopping driftwood for the
stove, and doing laundry as best she could by hand.
"With fire we test the gold.... Baha'u'llah
The winter
closed in with a fierceness that the ten following years never equaled. By the end
of the second month we had snow up to the eaves of the house. The only room we could
keep warm with our little wood stove was the kitchen
which we blocked off from rest of the house with old blankets hung over the doorway.
On hooks in the living room, I had hung an old rotten fish net which I tore out, re-sewed
and tore out. Such was the bitter cold blowing into the living room by the
unrelenting wind that within fifteen minutes, I would be forced to abandon my net sewing
and retreat into the warmth of the kitchen to thaw out.
